The hallway is the first thing you see when you come home, and usually the first place where things pile up. Shoes by the door, bags on the floor, coats over the banister.
A few small additions change that quickly.
Wall hooks are the starting point. Fixed at a height everyone can reach, they hold coats, tote bags and the umbrella that never quite dries. Foldable hooks sit flat against the wall when they are not in use, which helps in narrow spaces.
Shoes are next. A low rack or a single basket by the door gives them a clear place to go and stops the slow spread across the floor. Keep only the pairs you wear that week in the hallway. The rest can live in a cupboard.
A mat at the front door catches most of the dirt before it travels further into the house. A small tray or bowl on a shelf or cabinet keeps keys and sunglasses together, so mornings start without a search.
With these few pieces, the hallway goes from a place you rush through to a calm welcome at the end of the day. It is a small area, but it sets the tone for the rest of the home.
